BS5837 Tree Survey

BS5837 surveys support planning applications where trees may be affected by development, providing structured assessment to inform the design process.

Tree Survey

Assessment of trees to BS5837:2012 for planning applications.

Includes

  • Inspection and categorisation (A, B, C, U)
  • Tree schedule — species, dimensions, condition, life expectancy
  • Root Protection Areas (RPAs)
  • Tree Constraints Plan (TCP)

Can be extended to include

  • Arboricultural Impact Assessment (AIA)
  • Tree Protection Plan (TPP)
  • Arboricultural Method Statement (AMS)

Deliverables

  • PDF report, tree schedule, CAD drawings where required

Suitable for

  • Developers, landowners, and private clients

Turnaround

  • Site survey within 1–2 weeks
  • Report within 5–10 working days following survey

Design

Arboricultural input at design stage to integrate tree constraints early.

Includes

  • Guidance on tree constraints and RPAs
  • Advice on layout adaptation
  • Identifying justified tree removal
  • Input into design iterations
  • Support for planning submissions

Best results when brought in early, before layouts are fixed — but can also support post-design review and planning conditions.

Mitigation & Protection

Where tree removal cannot be avoided, practical mitigation measures including habitat enhancement and creation, both on-site and off-site.

Includes

  • Design-led mitigation — adjusting layouts and levels
  • No-dig surfaces and cellular confinement
  • Ground protection during construction
  • Tree protection fencing
  • Site supervision and monitoring
  • Targeted pruning
  • Soil and rooting improvements

Always site-specific and buildable.

Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG)

Support with mandatory BNG requirements using the statutory biodiversity metric.

Includes

  • Baseline habitat value assessment
  • On-site enhancement opportunities
  • Site layouts that contribute to BNG targets
  • Off-site BNG strategy where on-site delivery is constrained

Suitable for

  • Residential, school sites, mixed-use, community projects
